The moon as my pillow?

)
Wernborg is right, the reality is that we have a dual view of the Rom, both wrong, neither particularly flattering or compassionate. They are displaced, and over the centuries some may have come to prefer travel, but like most peoples, they'd like a home.
They are not flamboyant. We think of the women as promiscuous - they aren't. They're a very traditional, conservative people.
They work hard, and while some or many might be thieves, do they really have options? If no one will give you work, if no one will buy what you are selling, if you have nothing you can sell - how are you supposed to eat?
Those who settle in one place are among the poorest in that place. They lack education, and when they have education, improper nutrition hampers their learning. The Rom are beautiful people. They possess artistic traditions that humble and amaze me. They are determined. I wanted to recognize their beauty, but I simply don't have the skill to put all of the above into a song.
They are(were, I should say) probably from India, back when they began traveling. Possibly the lowest caste, the untouchables, and maybe they traveled beyond India in the hopes of a better life. But having been raised with the "untouchable" stigma, and taking mixed generations of people along, how do you change that? On to a new place, that is not home, but not far enough away to escape the stigma. Shoo, scram, you scum... anger wells up, and food must be had, and trickery is employed where ever it will work.
And inspite of thousands of years of vilification, they are artists, and givers of beauty, and they amaze me.
