*************
Martin tried to blink his tears away
but everything was a blur
He stumbled under the weight from his sons lifeless body
Blood still dripping from the bullethole in his chest
A big red stain in the gras behind them
told where the body had been
Robbed and shot
on his way home with goods
from the city four days ride away
Martin started walking back towards the village
with his son in his arms
The villagers came to meet him
arms waving, gesticulating
some asking questions, others yelling
but he could not hear them
he lay the warm body down
outside the carpenters shop
"Do your job", he said grimly
"What are you going to do?"
Said the carpenter, an old weather beaten man
The sheriff had arrived
"Matin, Don't do anything stupid
They will only kill you to"
"We have been hiding here for to long.
Someone has to put an end to this.
The line has to be drawn here
If you have any honor left in your body
You would come with me
For this time,
the bandits hiding in the old monestary ruins
have gone to far
"Who will ride with me?"
"I" said the carpenter
"I guess you are right" said the sheriff harsh
His pregnant wife started crying
Deputies! This mission is voluntary
All three of them took a step forward
Anyone else, asked Martin, looking around
Everyone looked anxiously down at their feet
Very well, six persons has a bigger chance than one
Someone mumbled
The rumor says they have a machinegun, hidden in a praire wagon
Martin tightened his gun belt, the old Colt Peacemaker was well used, but it still shot straight and he had a lot of ammo to his Winchester rifle.
A voice behind him spoke up
"Hey Martin"
it was his old friend Henrik
"You have been a good friend all my life, I will follow you into the mouths of hell"
Henrik was a old trapper and hunter, he coult shoot a squirrel throu the eye from a hundred feet. Maby they had a chance after all.
The villagers looked as the seven mounted their horses
Everyone except one woman, she could not look, she was kneing outside the carpenters shop, embracing her dead sons body, she realised she would soon loose her husband to.
She saw the look on Martins face that he was determined,
she could say or do nothing, to change his mind. She rose and ran stumbling through the village towards the small farm they had called home.
The seven started to ride out
"We do not know if we will come back
But we do know, that we died trying
For life in this village
For love
Because there comes a time in every mans life
When he must stand upp
For what is right
Even if all odds are against him
And the setting sun
colored the sky ominously red
For this is the time
Of
The
Last
Stand!
