The AKG C-451 Condenser Microphone Modular System, or CMS as it was originally called, was a wonderful series of condenser microphone capsules, preamps, and accessories made by AKG between the late 1960's and the mid 1980's. The C-451E was AKG's first solid state condenser microphone using transistors (including a field effect transistor or FET) instead of a vacuum tube in the preamplifier circuit. Click here to see info from a 1969 AKG C-451E catalog. As time went on the C-451 system grew to include a very wide range of interchangeable modular components. Accessories included screw on pads, swivels, and extension tubes. It is too bad that the C-451 was discontinued by AKG. Original (detachable capsule model) 451E is standard preamp, 451EB has rolloff filter (B stands for Bass attenuator). With the original design, if you wanted to attenuate the signal, there were -10db and -20db pads which could be screwed in between the capsule and the mic body.On the AKG website, there is an explanation that "E" is the suffix for XLR connector, and alternative "C" and "CB" suffixes are for DIN connector. It describes the 452 as having exactly the same functions and performance characteristics as the 451 models, but intended for use only with existing 48 volt (nominal) installations.As EngineEars said, the 452 needs 48v phantom, whereas the 451 range operates 9-52vAlso, as far as I know the 452 only came with rolloff filter (i.e. 452EB)
